UK Radio Legal
Edit on GitHubUsing the 433 MHz beacon in the United Kingdom: Ofcom rules, ISM limits, and the CEPT-derived framework.
UK Radio Legal
The UK left the EU but kept the CEPT radio framework, which Ofcom implements. The beacon’s 433 MHz ISM operation is license-free within the standard limits.
ISM operation
The 433.050 - 434.790 MHz band is available for license-free short-range devices under the harmonized SRD rules retained from CEPT. The general-use ceiling is 10 mW ERP. CE/UKCA-marked modules satisfy the equipment side.
UK specifics
- The UK Framework Agreement retains the ECC decisions, so the beacon’s European configuration applies unchanged.
- PMR446 remains license-free at 500 mW ERP with integrated antennas only.
- SEARCH mode (receive-only) requires no license.
Power, duty cycle and emergency
The same triangle as the rest of CEPT: routine beaconing at or below the ERP ceiling, duty-cycle limits respected, higher settings reserved for genuine emergencies, and the distress exception applying in real emergencies. See Duty Cycle Rule and Emergency Use Legal.
Amateur alternative
UK amateur licensing (M6/M0 and higher callsigns) opens the 70 cm band with full privileges and mandatory identification (see Callsign Identification).
