Amateur License Process

Edit on GitHub

Getting your amateur radio license step by step: study, exam, application, and the callsign you will program into the beacon.

Amateur License Process

The amateur license converts the beacon from a limited ISM device into a full-capability radio. The process is bureaucratic but short, and this page is the map.

The four steps

StepWhat happensTime
1. StudyLearn the theory: bands, propagation, safety, operating practice2 - 6 weeks
2. ExamPass the theory exam, online or at a local club1 day
3. ApplySubmit the application to the national regulator1 - 4 weeks
4. ReceiveGet your callsign and certificateSame day as step 3 in most countries

Study resources

Every country has official exam syllabi and question banks:

  • Italy: the ARI and the ministry’s question bank
  • Switzerland: OFCOM’s online exam and study guide
  • UK: the RSGB Foundation materials
  • US: the FCC question pools, free practice apps

The syllabus for the entry class covers exactly the material in this wiki’s RF Basics, Propagation and Safety pages: studying for the license and understanding the beacon reinforce each other.

After the license

  1. Program your callsign into the beacon’s identity settings (see Config Payload Format).
  2. Confirm the beacon transmits the callsign on every burst (see Callsign Identification).
  3. Keep the certificate with you: you may be asked to show it, and the beacon’s SEARCH mode lets you find other licensed operators.

The cost

Entry exams cost roughly 20 - 100 euros depending on the country, with no recurring fee in most places. Compared with commercial emergency beacons, the license is the cheap part of the setup.
