1. Not a certified rescue device
Aegis-Beacon is an open-source experimental project, not a certified rescue device. It is not approved, certified or endorsed by any rescue, aviation, maritime or telecommunications authority. It does not carry a PLB/EPIRB certification and must never be treated as a replacement for professional rescue equipment, certified personal locator beacons, satellite communicators or emergency services.
Use certified equipment (PLB, EPIRB, ELT, satellite messenger) alongside or instead of this device.
2. No warranty
The project, including all firmware, hardware designs, documentation and website content, is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. The authors make no guarantee that the device will transmit, receive, or function at all in any given environment.
3. Radio transmission is your responsibility
Operating radio equipment is regulated in every country. You are solely responsible for:
- Verifying that the frequencies, power levels and duty cycles you use are legal in your jurisdiction
- Obtaining any required licence (for example a ham radio licence or GMRS licence) before transmitting
- Not transmitting on protected frequencies such as 406.100 MHz, or on distress frequencies outside genuine emergencies
Misuse of radio frequencies is a criminal offence in most jurisdictions. See the Regulatory Compliance wiki article and the frequency database in DATASHEET.md.
4. No guarantee of reception or rescue
The radio link depends on terrain, antenna, battery state, atmospheric conditions and the receiver used. A rescue team may not hear the beacon, may not be listening on your frequencies, or may not be able to locate you. This device is a supplementary tool; it does not guarantee rescue.
5. Battery and hardware safety
Li-ion cells can catch fire or explode if damaged, short-circuited or charged incorrectly. Only use protected cells, a correct TP4056 module and the wiring documented in the Assembly Guide. Never leave a charging cell unattended. Do not expose the device to extreme temperatures beyond the rated operating range.
6. Medical and weather information
Any safety, medical, avalanche or weather information published on this site or in the wiki is general educational content. It is not professional medical or mountaineering advice. Always follow the guidance of certified guides, rescue professionals and local authorities.
7. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the authors, contributors and maintainers of Aegis-Beacon shall not be liable for any damages whatsoever arising from the use, misuse or inability to use the project, including loss of life, injury, data loss or property damage, whether in contract, tort or otherwise.
8. Third-party content
The site links to and embeds third-party resources (OpenStreetMap tiles, retailer listings, SDR software). These are subject to their own terms and are not controlled by this project. The repeater map data is community-contributed and may be incomplete or inaccurate.
9. No professional advice
Nothing on this website constitutes professional engineering, legal, medical or rescue advice. If you rely on this project in a professional capacity, verify everything independently with qualified experts.
