Morse Keying Practice

Edit on GitHub

Practicing reading and sending Morse for beacon work: the timing drills, the learning curve, and what proficiency actually buys you.

Morse Keying Practice

You do not need to know Morse to build the beacon, but the people who find you may need to read it. This page is the honest learning path for the skill.

Why it matters

The beacon transmits Morse so ANY receiver can hear it: the decoding can be done by software, a radio, or a human ear. The SDR Listening Guide covers the software path. The ear path needs practice, and this page is about that practice.

The learning curve

Morse proficiency comes in plateaus:

StageWhat you can doTime
1Recognize SOS and your callsignA weekend
2Copy simple words at slow speedA month
3Copy 12 WPM comfortably3 - 6 months

For beacon work, stage 1 is already useful: SOS and the identity are what the payload contains.

The drills

  • Timing drill: tap along with the beacon’s bursts, dot-dash rhythm, until the pattern is in your body (see Morse Timing Reference).
  • The SOS drill: ... --- ... at the beacon’s WPM, then at double speed.
  • The callsign drill: your own callsign in Morse, repeatedly, until instant.
  • Paired listening: a second beacon (or the demo page) transmitting while you copy.

Tools

The website’s Demo plays the payload as Morse with adjustable speed, and the Morse Decoder Tools page lists software that checks your copy. Practice apps for phones train the ear efficiently.

The honest goal

You do not need to become a contest operator. The goal is: given a beacon burst on a scratchy receiver, you can pull out the three things the payload carries: the distress signal, the identity, and the coordinates. That is the skill the rescue scenario demands.
