Radio Communication Basics
Overview
The beacon is a one-way transmitter, but it lives in a radio ecosystem. Knowing basic radio etiquette makes testing with others pleasant and safe.
Simplex vs Repeater
| Type | How it works |
|---|---|
| Simplex | Direct radio-to-radio on one frequency |
| Repeater | A base listens on one frequency and retransmits on another |
The beacon transmits simplex on 433 MHz ISM. It does not use repeaters - the design assumption is a direct link to whoever is listening.
Calling Conventions
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Testing with a friend | Agree on frequency + time first |
| Calling someone | Say callsign/name, wait for reply |
| Emergency | Transmit SOS pattern, keep it simple |
Listening Before Transmitting
On shared ISM bands, listen first. If the frequency is busy with someone else’s telemetry, move 100-200 kHz or schedule your test.
